Description – Midnight Whale Watching
A truly unique midnight whale watching experience in the magical light of the midnight sun. A guide will meet you in the Elding Whale Watching Centre which is located in Ægisgarður in the old harbor area in Reykjavik’s city center. The whale watching center is facilitated on board an old fishing vessel permanently placed by the pier. Before or after the tour you can enjoy the onboard multimedia show that includes images, videos, and facts about the whales and marine life.
The mystical midnight sun and the nature of the bay provide a unique wildlife experience.
With the added feature of a live troubadour performing in the vessels lounge, the Midnight whale watching tour is ideal as a relaxing end of a busy day. You can even go before beginning a fun night in town. As our whales never fully sleep, we can expect to see minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, harbor porpoises and humpback whales just as on the day tours. To make it even more memorable we often shut down the engines to enjoy the soothing sound of the water, the whales, and the birds.
You can check previous sightings through our online Whale Diary before your tour.
Our sighting success on previous midnight whale watching tours is 81%, however, the cetacean abundance is unpredictable and varies with the food availability of our shores. The most common cetacean in the area are the minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, and harbor porpoises and occasionally we see other species including the humpback whales, killer whales/orcas and even fin whales. Read more about the most commonly spotted cetacean here.
If no whales or dolphins are seen on the midnight whale watching tour we will offer you a complimentary ticket valid for two years.
We abide by a Code of Conduct for responsible whale watching. Thus each encounter is on the animals terms and distance may be kept to minimize disturbance.

Our whale watching tours are focused mainly on the southern part of Faxaflói, just off Reykjavík. Each day we scan the area for signs of whales as we never know for sure where we might find them. Sometimes we have to go far while at other times the whales are quite close to shore. On rare occasions, we head to other areas and/or depart from nearby harbors e.g. Hafnarfjörður, Keflavík, Sandgerðir or Grindavík. This is the case when weather conditions or chances of seeing the whales are greater there than in our main area.
