Tour Description

Join this unique tour to see the South coast waterfalls, we will ride on a fat bike to the famous plane wreck in Sólheimsandur, then go glacier hiking on Sólheimajökulll. We end the day with a peak into a volcanic tube in a secret lava cave!

Seljalandsfoss waterfall

The first stop is at Seljalandsfoss waterfall which you can walk behind and get a unique point of view while feeling the vibrations of the water hitting the ground. It’s an automatic Instagram blockbuster. Right next to Seljalandsfoss is his little brother Gljúfrabúi, a smaller waterfall hidden in a narrow gorge which is accessible only by balancing on small stones in the river.

Skógafoss waterfall

The pearl of the South Coast has to be Skógafoss waterfall. From the 60 meter high cliffs of East Eyjafjöll mountains, the waterfall pours down making, arguably, the most photogenic waterfall in the country. Over the years, the water has carved itself into the mountain, tucking the beautiful waterfall into a small gorge. Add rainbows forming in the waterfall’s spray and you have yourself a Kodak moment. Alongside the waterfall lies a staircase up to the cliff with views looking down into the gorge and onto the waterfall. The 527 steps up to the top provide a fantastic warm-up for the glacier hike!

Glacier Hike on Sólheimajökull glacier

Here the adventure continues at Sólheimajökull glacier which is part of the 4th biggest glacier in Iceland, Mýrdalsjökull. We will provide helmets, harnesses, crampons and ice axes before hiking on the ice for 1 to 1,5 hours. Our glacier guides are all trained and licensed and provide a safe, entertaining and informative hike. A spectacular experience to learn more about this breathtaking and increasingly rare natural phenomenon.

DC-3 plane wreck on Sólheimasandur

After the glacier hike, we head out to Sólheimasandur desert where a US Nacy DC3 crash landed in 1973 after running out of fuel in midair. The wreck has since then been immortalized in numerous music videos and viral photographs. Hike over volcanic sand and ash towards a black sand beach containing a crashed Navy airplane deemed too far away to salvage. Enjoy!

Secret lava cave

But we still have our final blow! Explore the inside of a lava cave which formed in a volcanic eruption 5000 years ago. Equipped with helmets and flashlights we will scramble over big lava rocks and crawl into the darkness of the Icelandic underground.

  1. All sights - one day!

This tour had exactly everything we wanted to see and more! Our guide Stefano was just so great. We got to see the 2 waterfalls, go glacier hiking on Sólheimajökull, then we went to a beautiful geothermal poll and then to a lava cave where everything was frozen in the inside. The guide was so caring and nice and we learned alot about Icelandic geology.

  2. The Naked Truth

This is Iceland, you get all seasons in 1 day. When you are told to pack appropriately, do yourself a favour and listen. Some tourists on our tour had fabulous expensive warm down jackets which mean nothing if you hiking in rain. So unless you dress for the occasion, you will not enjoy this trip. Luckily I did and I loved it. The highlight for me was the glacier hike except that it was too short. The secret lava cave was an incredible experience and yes that included hiking across muddy uneven terrain in the rain. When we were in the cave we had a minute of silence and complete darkness. It gives you a whole new perspective on having light. Unfortunately we could not cycle to the DC plane due to bad weather so we went to the beach with the basalt colums instead. All in all a great active and fun day. I will recommend this tour.

  3. Highlight of Iceland trip

This tour was recommended to me by Iceland Advice and oh-boy did the tour deliver!

Perfect amount of sightseeing and adventurous activities. Would recommend for everyone!!!

  4. The ultimate day tour in iceland

I have to say that going for a full day of activities with Troll Expeditions was the best idea I got in Iceland, experiencing Lava Cave, Glacier, Hot Pool and also mountain biking. It´s something that can not be described with only few sentences. I made memories that will last a lifetime and friends that I will keep in touch with for a long time.
