Snorkeling in Iceland – Silfra adventure is a day tour from Reykjavik, once in a lifetime experience, you don’t want to miss it. You don’t have to be a certified diver to experience the clear and beautiful water world in Silfra.
We offer daily tours to Silfra where you get the chance to float between the two continental plates while enjoying the clarity of the water. The tour begins when we pick you up at your accommodation in Reykjavik or if you want you can meet us at the service center in Thingvellir National Park.
During the drive, your guide will give you information about the history and unique geology of the UNESCO World Heritage site Thingvellir National Park which is a part of the famous Golden Circle. When you arrive at Silfra, you will be given a dry suit and snorkeling equipment and a warm undergarment (Teddy bear suit) to wear under the dry suit. The guide will show you how to use the equipment to ensure a pleasant snorkeling trip. The snorkelling trip takes about 30-40 minutes. You will explore the four main parts of Silfra The big crack, Silfra Hall, the cathedral and Silfra Lagoon. The guide will take pictures on the snorkeling trip and will send them to you free of charge.
Iceland sits on the top of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the North American and the Eurasian tectonic plate. The Silfra fissure is located right at the point where the two tectonic plates meet. The water in Silfra is 1000-year-old melted glacier water that comes from the second largest glacier in Iceland (Langjökull) or the long glacier. It takes the water about 30 years to arrive from the glacier through the underground lava into Silfra. This natural filtering system makes the water in Silfra incredibly clear with visibility around 100-150 meters. The water is probably the purest drinking water you find in Iceland so make sure to drink some of Silfra water while you are snorkling.
