Tour Description

Snorkeling in Iceland –  Silfra adventure is a day tour from Reykjavik, once in a lifetime experience, you don’t want to miss it. You don’t have to be a certified diver to experience the clear and beautiful water world in Silfra.

We offer daily tours to Silfra where you get the chance to float between the two continental plates while enjoying the clarity of the water. The tour begins when we pick you up at your accommodation in Reykjavik or if you want you can meet us at the service center in Thingvellir National Park.

During the drive, your guide will give you information about the history and unique geology of the UNESCO World Heritage site Thingvellir National Park which is a part of the famous Golden Circle. When you arrive at Silfra, you will be given a dry suit and snorkeling equipment and a warm undergarment (Teddy bear suit) to wear under the dry suit. The guide will show you how to use the equipment to ensure a pleasant snorkeling trip. The snorkelling trip takes about 30-40 minutes. You will explore the four main parts of Silfra The big crack, Silfra Hall, the cathedral and Silfra Lagoon. The guide will take pictures on the snorkeling trip and will send them to you free of charge.

Iceland sits on the top of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the North American and the Eurasian tectonic plate. The Silfra fissure is located right at the point where the two tectonic plates meet. The water in Silfra is 1000-year-old melted glacier water that comes from the second largest glacier in Iceland (Langjökull) or the long glacier. It takes the water about 30 years to arrive from the glacier through the underground lava into Silfra. This natural filtering system makes the water in Silfra incredibly clear with visibility around 100-150 meters. The water is probably the purest drinking water you find in Iceland so make sure to drink some of Silfra water while you are snorkling.

  1. Best experience to date♡☆

This was by far the best thing I’ve ever experienced! And I’ve done a good bit, including skydiving in Las Vegas.

Ivan and the other guy who joined us in the afternoon session on September 25 were both awesome! Sorry for not remembering your name… Ivan talked too much, ha jk!

We were hesitating since it was already cold. And on top of that we had to wear very tight and constricting gear, including thermals and dry suit. I literally thought I wouldn’t be able to breathe. Then the minute I put my head in the water and was floating, it was surreal. Totally worth it! And it was cold, by the end… my face was a little numb and hands too, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

Love you guys and thanks for the pictures! I absolutely loved my picture as well and think you should put it on your site❤

  2. Awesome!!

A snorkeling experience not to be missed. We were accompanied by Ivan and Manuel, both very professional and friendly. I was a bit apprehensive about the glacial waters but with the dry suit and thermal under suit, did not feel the cold at all. It was difficult to put on all the gear but both our guides were always ready to explain and lend a hand to get us equipped for the experience.

Can’t wait to see the photos taken by Ivan, which will be ready a week after the trip. (Included in the price)

    Fully recommended.

  3. Dissapointment

I went with this tour in April 2017. It was a good experience with the guides but to my disappointment the photos that were supposed to be emailed to us never came. It’s a huge disappointment as I was looking forward to the photos as memory. No one replied to my email since. It seems as if you guys were keen only to do business and zero follow up. Huge disappointment.

  4. Special place to snorkel

It was amazing. Our guides Carlos and Emmanuel were very helpful, friendly and fun. We were picked up from our hotel. We talked about the geoogy and history of the area on our way. Met with other people at the park. They put us in dry suits and assisted with even the most basic stuff. We had great time. They also took our pictures which is a plus. They drove us back to the hotel. It is an awesome place to see and easy enougj for someone who never snorkeled. Definitely worth it.

  5. Overall, this is a great tour. The views are amazing and it is worth the price. Picture are also included and we got them within 5 days. While the water is very close to freezing, the wetsuit provided keep you very warm. Your face is partially exposed, but I honestly didn’t notice the cold after a few minutes.

My only complaints were waiting for very late snorkelers and special attention paid to certain snorkelers. A group of 3 girls was very late (one girl was 45 minutes late) and the whole group was forced to wait on them before we could start. There are very clear instructions on when and where to meet, so I thought this was rude to the other participants. In addition, there is a lagoon section at the end and we were given time to explore a little bit more on our own before returning to the van. However, we ended up being rushed since we were the last tour of the day and the tour guides wanted to go home. Starting promptly could have alleviated this.

One of the tour guides obviously had a crush on a few of the girls, so many of the pictures included the same girls over and over again. While I got several good pictures, it was frustrating to see that there were only 1-2 of me and my husband but 10 of the same group of girls over and over.

However, as I mentioned, I thought the overall experience was very good and definitely worth the money!

  6. Don't hesitate. Book!

Don’t hesitate about booking, just do it. It was an incredible experience. I was expecting to feel cold, but the dry suit keeps you nice and warm… and your face can handle 30min in the icy water.

We had a small group: solo traveler (me) + 3 girls from NYC. Carlos did a great job of pacing the trip so that it felt full and leisurely. He had an amazing energy about him, was quick to laugh and generally it was impossible to have a negative experience around him.

The clincher with this trip: they take photos of you while you’re in the water (included in the price) and email them after. Worth it.

  7. Great snorkelling experience between two continents!

I did a snorkelling tour on Easter Sunday and that was probably the best Easter I had ever had. Wonderful sunny weather which made Silfra glacier waters even more colourful and amazing. Both the driver and the guide were really friendly professional and helpful. They explained all the instructions in details and kept us company throughout the entire experience. Like most tours in Reykjavik it is not a cheap trip but still the price offered by Iceland Advice was very good if compared with other tour companies. The price also included both hotel pick-up and pics taken by one of the guides. Highly recommended!

  8. Wonderful snorkelling trip

It was a wonderful trip and you won’t feel cold when you did the snorkelling. They have good service. They provided cookies and hot chocolate after snorkelling so that we can feel warmer soon. This is a good chance you should not miss it.

  9. Amazing clear water

We really liked this tour. We were part on a big group and there was two guide with us. Each of them was very patient and they explained really well how to snorkeling in that clear water. They also took many pictures and they sent evrything in less than a week to our email. They are really professional, dedicated and for that reason we did enjoy our trip.
We recommand highly to go with them

  10. Unique experience

Fantastic trip- booked as a 40th birthday surprise. Well organised, great communication and really helpful tour staff. Husband loved the snorkelling and will remember it for years to come. Just a shame our children couldn’t join in- they were below the age limit, much to their disappointment!

  11. Mesmerising Experience

Amazing experience of snorkeling in Silfra. Guides where very helpful and made this one the my best moments in life to cherish. Highly recommended those who visit Iceland

  12. Snorkeling between tectonics plates in a dry suit - who's done that?!

This was a cool thing to say you did it. The dry suits did their job in keeping us from freezing while snorkling in perfectly clear ice-blue waters between the plates. The scenes were beautiful but not ‘out of this world’ – the experience though was very cool!

  13. Helpful and mesmerizing!

It was a magical experience! Joe was very informative and the guides were helpful in ensuring our gear was on correctly before and during the snorkel.

  14. Wonderfil

My friend and I would like this trip. At first I was a bit afraid of the weather. After all, it was very cold in Iceland. We are self-employed to the designated meeting place. At the meeting we were really very nice welcomed and the next steps were explained. We drove to the crack and let and dress. We were told everything. All in all the team was really nice and the experience was pretty cold.

  15. Snorkeling over diving

We had a tough time deciding whether to dive or snorkel in the end we chose snorkel through Iceland advice. We did not regret our decision as the sight is not very deep and the water is so pristine there is no benefit to diving over snorkeling in my opinion plus we saved a load of cash! Ivan and Carlos were legends and made the whole experience unforgettable and I wasn’t cold at all!
Thanks guys for a fantastic experience!

  16. Cold water but totally worthy.

It was a fantastic experience. Never done snorkeling before. The guides Carols, Joe and Ivan are so nice, guide me going through the narrow stream channel, help us get in and out the suit. Just amazing experience. Water is cold but it was fun. Awesome!
    – Joanne from San Francisco 🙂

  17. Best snorkeling in ice cold waters!

Our guide was Carlos, who was absolutely the best! Very energetic, informative, accommodating and hilarious 🙂 He even took all these photos of us, documenting our time in the water, which we can’t wait to see!

Our group was composed of 3 persons only, which we loved! It allowed us to go at our own relaxed pace and view all the details up close. We are use to diving in the warm waters of the tropics in just a 3mm wetsuit, so snorkeling in ice cold waters in a dry suit made us quite apprehensive. But Carlos put all our worries at ease and made this one of our most enjoyable and memorable experiences in Iceland!

We are definitely recommending to all our friends 🙂

  18. Very nice day

Great experience snorkelling Silfra, Would recommend it to anyone travelling in Iceland. Guide Ivan was very friendly and helpful. We had to wait a little while before going snorkeling but overall great day in Iceland.

  19. Fantastic Experience

Really great experience with these guys, from the initial booking process via Matthias and then the excursion itself. We had an incredible time snorkelling in Silfra, and our instructor Ivan was awesome – super friendly, fun and knowledgeable, and even managed to get us in the water first so we had the whole fissure to ourselves. Thanks guys 🙂

  20. Service was fantastic

Massive thank you to Matthias for being so helpful! He’s extremely knowledgeable about the tours and clearly has a passion for what he does. We booked a snorkelling tour on his advise and it was fantastic! Brace yourself for the cold but a genuine once in a lifetime experience. We were actually recommended the cheapest tour by Matthias which was almost as refreshing as the water!!!

  21. LOVED IT!

LOVED everything from start to finish. The booking process was easy. I got picked up from my hotel and by a great guide.
I can totally recommend this tour!

  22. Great service!!!

We went snorkeling @ Silfra, the instructor was very Pro, and we had so much fun!! 🙂
It was super cool! 100% recommend.

  23. Easy booking

Very easy to book the excursion with Iceland Advice! We really enjoyed the snorkeling experience in Iceland!!

  24. Snorkel to Remember!

If there is a company that you need to look for to have the best snorkeling trip it is Iceland Advice! We went snorkeling on 25th November and below are the few positives!

-The cost was less expensive than all the others.
-Matthias was so helpful and I had a ton of questions and he answered them patiently. Sorry Matthias for dropping emails every minute and bombarding your inbox!
-the booking went so smoothly and didn’t have any hassle. We were picked up from our hotel.
-It was a small group and our instructor was a pro and was giving equal attention to all. We were the first ones to get into the fissure and thus it was like we had the place for ourselves!
-I am scared of heights and the instructor was beside me and telling me the places were it is really deep so that I could prepare myself. It was really appreciated.
Hot chocolate and cookies after the cold experience and You get photos for no extra cost! Yippee

I have no negatives to write. It is one of the best experiences I had and I recommend to any of you! The ratings for Iceland Advice says it all! It is a 5 star experience!

  25. It was a great experience. If you are in doubt, as we were, just do it! The organization is great.

  26. Great Value. Great Time. Highly Recommend.

Booking – We were able to book the trip online, which was super convenient! I heard back from Iceland Adventure Tours right away and was put on the schedule.
Transportation – Val picked us up from the flat we are staying in and was right on time.
Experience – The entire experience was incredible. Val had all of the gear we need, a GoPro to capture the trip, and was very friendly. He gave us some background on the continental divide without taking us through an entire history lesson (which was perfect!). The water was cold on my face and slightly on my hands, but everything else was surprisingly warm. Not to mention, we had hot cocoa, coffee, and cookies waiting for us when we got out 🙂

One more thing: Val provided us with the pictures from the trip included in the cost of the booking. In my experience with guided tours, this NEVER happens! There’s always last minute costs that you don’t factor in, but with Iceland Adventure Tours: what you see is what you get. No hidden fees!

    All around, awesome time!

  27. Snorkeling Silfa: most amazing thing, ever!!!

Snorkeling in near freezing water was NOT something that sounded appealing to me when my 14 year old son suggested it. “Stop being such a big baby”, he said. We are so glad that I found my courage! Val and Alex were amazing, reassuring, humorous, helpful, and knowledgeable. They brought all the gear and took care of everything, and then had hot cocoa for us at the end of the experience. In all honestly, the dry suit was so good, that I was not uncomfortable at all (and I am a big baby when it comes to cold water). The water in Silfa was mesmerizing and beautiful. I described the experience to my friends as “other worldly”, and I even made a few daredevil and thrill-seeking friends quite jealous. 🙂 Thank you so very much for the experience!

  28. Fantastic experience!

We did the snorkeling in Silfra trip. Val came right on time picking us up, he was extremely helpful and patient in getting people into the suits. He did give us plenty of time to take pictures after we finished the tour. We were very happy with the entire experience and this trip was $80 less than the snorkeling tour we first looked at for the two of us. This truly is a once in a lifetime experience.
